An interview Hillary Clinton did with NPR has surfaced and in it she says this:
SCOTT SIMON: I mean, did you ever back in the ’60s, between when — I believe you were a Goldwater girl —
HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right.
SCOTT SIMON: — and whenever you became politically –
HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right. And I feel like my political beliefs are rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with. I don’t recognize this new brand of Republicanism that is afoot now, which I consider to be very reactionary, not conservative in many respects. I am very proud that I was a Goldwater girl.
This interview is from Jan. 1996 and if one remembers, that was still the era of Dick Morris and triangulation. The Clintons were allying themselves with the Republicans and drastically moving the nation to the right.
When I say the Clintons elected more Republicans than Karl Rove ever dreamed, this is what I mean. How can one defeat the plague of conservatism when we choose conservatives to fight our battles?
How can we champion the successes of our party, like the New Deal, when we continue to elect leaders who are intent on destroying it?
Who stands up for the working poor? Who stands up for seniors? Who stands up for people who can’t afford health care?
No wonder the Democrats can’t even defeat the most idiotic, most insane, most offensive Republican party in its history.
She’s proud to be a Goldwater Girl! This is who Democrats want to lead their party on the economy? The environment? Issues of war and peace? Poverty?
