Actually, I bought two of each, one for myself and one for my brother. Why oh why did I leave video game development a couple of years ago? It was right on the cusp of a true revolution. And now the revolution is here. And this Gear VR is the lite version of modern VR. The real thing hasn’t released yet. I was already planning to get the Playstation VR this fall, but I might have to see how much better the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are and how much it costs to buy a PC that can make the most of them. But already my mind is completely BLOWN!!!
I was riding with dirt bikers on sand dunes.
I was swimming with seals.
I was on top of the Pyramids and the Sphynx.
The games that can play on a phone are… eh… well, the potential is certainly very apparent.
But sitting in the middle of the Lion King on stage and standing on top of a skyscraper in NY.
I imagine that everyone who has tried this out has probably already surmised that the only reason I am writing this is because I am currently waiting for my goddamn phone to recharge!
Oh my god. I have waited my entire life to geek out like this. I feel sick to my stomach I am so excited. It might also be a bit of motion sickness as well. :P
If you have a chance to go to a store that has a demo, do it. It might not blow your mind like it did mine, but I can’t imagine how you won’t be impressed. There was an elderly couple watching me flip out in Best Buy this afternoon (I went in for an iPhone wall plug and saw the demo) and they were flipping out just as much after trying it themselves. So was the next guy who wandered by. The Best Buy people asked me if I would mind wearing a blue shirt since I was selling this to people trying it out.
My wife was not quite as impressed as I was until I showed her the seals swimming around her. Then she turned into a squealing little girl clutching her hands to her mouth in delight as she spun around watching the seals. She was just about to try out another 360 video when the warning about critically low battery flashed on screen (so cool how you get email messages).
Oh, and watching Netflix inside of VR was insane!! It was like being in a theater. It was crazy!
Oh, it’s up to 21% battery. I gotta watch a couple more 360 videos. There’s worlds to explore before I go to bed tonight!!!
