While some of you may not know me yet or know of our campaign, that’s okay! We are grassroots and fundraising the old fashion way; by engaging voters! We won’t have the fancy ads or big time FEC reports to boast about, but what we do have is the people and to me, that’s all we need!
I am running in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District. Yes, the one that Michelle Fiore(!) is running in. The legislator who believes that cancer can be cured with baking soda and water. The 3rd Congressional District has been (un)represented by Joe Heck and it’s time that we had a Representative that, you know, represented the people!
My name is Alex Singer, and I am running for Congress. My candidacy is not one that is scripted from a political handbook nor is it controlled by high-paid consultants who wish to put their imprint on this campaign. This campaign is about you, my fellow Americans and constituents in the 3rd District. I don’t come from a famous family with a popular last name or a large personal bank account to self-fund. I never sought the establishments’ endorsement, and I never held the ambition to seek public office. But after years of our interests being bargained away in the name of “progress,” I knew it was time to run.
What makes my story unique is that I am the first “Safety Net” Democrat to seek office here in Nevada. What does that mean? Nearly five years ago I was diagnosed with a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis that forced me to use the social safety net programs of Social Security Disability, Medicaid and Medicare. Without which, I would not be here today and be in a position to serve my country in Congress and make sure that these programs are there for Americans today and tomorrow. These programs are life-saving programs, and while they are not perfect, they are better than the alternative that Republicans (and some Democrats) like to peddle.
From first-hand experience, I understand that the way to fix these programs is by expanding them, not “reforming” them through cuts. We need to increase Social Security Disability to help those in need. As someone who went through the process, not an easy one, I can tell you that there isn’t rampant fraud and abuse (less than 1% does not count) as the system is designed to weed them out. We need to expand the Disability program by expanding benefits and creating a more streamlined process to help with the tremendous case load that the Social Security Administration has to sort through.
We must expand Medicaid and Medicare by making these programs available for ALL Americans. Yes, socialized medicine. It works. I’ve experienced it and I can tell you that without these two programs, Medicaid and Medicare, I would not be able to afford my $1,200/month medication that I need to stay out of the hospital and be a healthier and productive citizen. When we expand these programs to ALL Americans, these programs will become even better ones that offer more and better services for Americans. Talk to your parents, grandparents, or me, and ask them how they would get by without these programs. The answer? They couldn’t. I couldn’t.
I am a living testament to everything that Progressive Democrats fight for when we push for expanding the safety net. I am who you can use an example to show that these programs work. These programs don't create a generation of moochers and lazy Americans who have no desire to work. That’s not who I am, and that’s not who the millions of Americans who use these programs are. These programs were designed and are used to help vulnerable Americans get back on their feet and be a productive member of society, whether they need to stay on these programs or not.
This is why I am running for Congress. I am running to represent you and your needs because my family has those same needs. I am running for Congress because for too long Americans have had “leaders” in Washington, who make decisions that have no care or worry for the consequences of their decisions, because those decisions won’t affect them. I will be your voice in Washington and I will make sure that you and your family once again have a say in the decisions that affect your lives.
Please join us in this campaign to retake Congress and move this country toward a more inclusive, prosperous and Progressive future that will benefit ALL Americans, rich and poor.
Thank you,
Alex Singer
