Maybe I am alone, but there are a few words that I could go without seeing for awhile.
1) Utilize. Use? A more descriptive action verb? Passive voice is utilized to convey shitty messages.
2) Functionality. Function? not sure what “ality” adds to the meaning.
3) _______ splaining. We aren’t breaking the forth wall and talking to some unknown audience (Deadpoolsplaining) or a long aside to ourselves (Hamletsplaining). On a blog advocating a certain strain of political thought, people will do some explaining.
“Splaining,” A magic spell invoked to stop all dialogue. Oh you’re X, you are X-splaining to me. Bam! I have snuffed out the argument without ever addressing any points raised. Go me.
However, people like to phrase their statements in the form of questions. Example: How can you believe that when Cthulhu will awaken from his watery home in R’lyeh a devour us all? The question implies your lack of knowledge. (A classic Brainy Smurfsplain) Someone could be “splaining” some real truths, someone could also be a horrible jerk. Ignore it, push back, but can we not reflexively call it “splaining” and cut off all dialogue?
4) Neoliberal. First, Neoliberal dissected into its competent parts: neo and liberal. Neo or new, is not necessarily bad and most on this blog likely identify with the word “liberal.” It’s used much the same way “socialist” is used by the GOP. A word that people have a vague understanding of the meaning tied up with a truckload of negative emotions. You combine the word with another, more descriptive word, so that the two are tied together. (“Neoliberal stooge” “job-killing socialist”) Reclaiming the word “liberal” is really hard to do when a “neoliberal” is a common pejorative term. Not to say that it’s an inappropriate or incorrect use/meaning of the word, but maybe just be more direct? X is for trade practices that hurt American jobs and exploit people around the world. (as an example)
5) Oligarch. Call people bourgeoisie, proletariat, or plebeians and watch as people are dazzled by your use of old terms for different social classes. Wealthy? rich? 1%? Elites? (though that also has a positive connotation) all are less anachronistic.
Okay I’m done cranksplaining functionalities to you plebs.
