All the discussions about Donald Trump largely miss the point. Donald Trump is not a Nazi. He is not a racist. He is not a Republican, or an authoritarian, or a conservative.
All of those are beliefs. A Nazi has a set of beliefs. An authoritarian does too. A conservative has certain convictions. You and I may not like their beliefs, values or convictions, but they have them.
Donald Trump has none of that. The point isn’t that he is a flip flopper. We don’t need a #whichDonald . #whichHillary works because it plays off her weakness- her expedient nature, which wears and readily discards ideologies. Trump doesn’t even wear them. Trump has no problem saying something like “I am very tough on illegal immigrants, very tough. And you know, I have always believed in amnesty for illegal immigrants.” The foregoing could be an actual Trump quote. Perhaps it is.
Donald Trump’s sole guiding principle is the desire for the intangible- for fame, for adoration, for crowds of fans, for approval. He has everything else; he has money, power, a social circle. He won’t worry about where he’ll eat tomorrow. He has reached the pinnacle of Maslow’s hierarchy in a way few of us ever will.
And it leaves him empty. A lifetime of trading on his father’s name, a lifetime of casual racism, a lifetime of shady deals and generally fucking people over and what has he got to show for it? A forlorn penis.
No wonder he wants more- and he will say anything and do anything to get it.
