I had been watching this story for about a year, and yesterday… miracle of miracles… the good guys won!
An Italian development group had tried to push through a huge project in the town of Tusayan, at the west entrance to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Bottom line was there was NEVER enough water available to accomplish the project, let alone sustain it. The company, of course, floated all of the easily rebuffed promises regarding environmental impact and employment, especially for Native Americans.
Over 100,000 people stepped up and spoke up and the project is now settling like dust over the vishnu schist layer at river level.
Now , we are 1 for 3… I fear we will not be as successful in protecting the Canyon from a push to resurrect uranium mining. Again there is simply NO WATER to do this with, much less protect the environment. The first time someone tries to tell you that it CAN be done, ask them what progress has been made in protecting the people of Cameron at the east entrance to the South Rim. So that probably drops us to 1 and 1, what about #3?
Please take the time to stop this one if you can. Again, there is no need for this, it is not sustainable, and the promise of jobs and revenue is questionable.
Thanks for your consideration!
