So I was watching The Young Turks yesterday and Cenk Uyger went off on a rant about the whole Bernie Bro thing and how offensive it is to progressives.
I already knew from an article I read earlier in the day that Secretary Clinton used this same divisive strategy to attack then Senator Obama in 2008. Salon.com — Hey Obama Boys: Back off already!
But that got me thinking, just how long has Secretary Clinton been playing the gender card? How long has she been pitting women against men for her own political gain?
The answer is at least 16 years now. That’s right folks, in her 2000 Senate campaign many point to a key moment that cost her opponent Rick Lazio the election, and it’s straight out of the Secretary Clinton gender slam playbook. Here’s a video from current Secretary Clinton cheerleader Chris Matthew’s show.
After this debate moment the Clinton campaign went in to overdrive pulling the “Oh no a big bad man came close to me, please help me, I’m just a girl!” defense and it cost Lazio any hope he had of winning the election.
Many supporters of Mrs. Clinton said they found Mr. Lazio to be pushy and disrespectful during the debate in Buffalo -- bullying her in a way that he would not have bullied a male opponent.
Mrs. Clinton's senior advisers have seized on that notion to blunt favorable portrayals of Mr. Lazio as strong-willed and determined, and Mrs. Clinton joined the effort yesterday. Expanding on a comment she made the morning after the debate, Mrs. Clinton received knowing chuckles and applause when she said having two younger brothers was the best preparation for her sometimes bruising encounter with Mr. Lazio.
Now, of course as a progressive I’m happy that a Republican lost that race, but if this doesn’t convince women who support the Secretary that they’re just being used by her to get what she wants I don’t know what will. You know the old saying…
