Greetings …
And welcome to another Baja Arizona Kos Open Thread. There’s a Democratic candidates’ debate tonight, 6 o’clock our time, but in the meantime check in, read some news and tell us what’s going on in your part of Baja Arizona.
Mining News
Officials from Hudbay Minerals have announced that their Rosemont mine project will be put on hold indefinitely due to low copper prices and regulatory hurdles. ➡ Tucson Weekly, ➡ AZ Daily Star. In another promising development, the US Forest Service has rejected an application for a road easement needed by Italian company Stilo Development Group USA for their planned housing development at Tusayan near the Grand Canyon. This will slow the project down considerably if it doesn’t stop it completely. ➡ AZ Daily Star.
Planespotting
Warbirds were flying over midtown all weekend as part of Heritage Flight training. I’ve seen
P-51s, a P-47, a P-38 and an F-86, all flying in formation with an F-16, an F-22 and an F-35. The F-35s weren’t as loud as I was afraid they might be. I’d heard that they were terribly noisy but they’re not much louder than F-16s. Next weekend is the big airshow at D-M and the Thunderbirds will be performing. I’ll be sure to stay home and catch that.
No Billionaires in Baja ?
The Arizona Republic lists 9 billionaires that live in Arizona, all in the Phoenix area. ➡ azcentral One of them is Peter Sperling, heir to the Apollo Education Group fortune. That’s the University of Phoenix. Who says nobody goes into education to get rich ? Speaking of getting rich off education, you’ll remember that Debbie Lesko has introduced a bill in the State Senate to allow all Arizona families to get vouchers. I have no doubt that the bill began as ALEC model legislation, they’ve been pushing charters and vouchers forever. Senator Steve Farley (D-northside) debated Lesko on KAET’s Arizona Horizon. You can watch that here ➡ Arizona Horizon, March 3.
CD-2 news
I got this from Baja’s Progressive icon Raúl Grijalva:
Azazello,
Over the last 14 years we have fought together for things like comprehensive immigration reform, revitalizing public education and protecting our environment. Today I want to introduce you to Victoria Steele, a candidate for Congress in my neighboring district, AZ-02 which includes Tucson and much of Southeast Arizona.
For the last several years, Victoria has been a strong Progressive voice in the Arizona State Legislature leading the fight for such things as expedited foster home approval in an effort to better protect the children of Arizona.
Today I am asking you to join me in endorsing Victoria for the Democratic Nomination in Arizona’s Second Congressional District. We need more and better Democrats like Victoria Steele in Congress to champion the big ideas that we want like a raise in the minimum wage and fixing our “broken” immigration system.
Together we can help Victoria win the primary in August and then win the election in November so she can fight for all of us.
Peace,
Raul
Here’s her website ➡ Victoria Steele for Congress
Maybe we should try to get her to address a BAK Meet-Up ?
OK
That’s all I got for this evening. What’s new with you ?
