I thought I was done with being Black being White. I was. Really. I was. I am definitely tired of explaining why some things have to be called out. I was so done that when this meme popped up on my facebook I really did not question it but my daughter did. Her response made me remember why I can’t afford to be tired of calling out bullshit. Ready to push it to the back of my mind and just drone through life. She took the meme apart brilliantly.
The Meme: The pictures above are displayed first then the post reads:
Black women, look what other females go through for you to have that weave in your hair. Grow your own natural hair. #blackpride
My Daughter’s response: This post is misleading. 1) First of all black women definitely aren't the only race that wears weaves. ALL races do. 2) I'd like to see sources for these photos that provide context as to where they came from and what exactly they are depicting. 3) Wearing weaves isn't something that's inherently shameful. You can have Black pride and choose to wear weave. 3) Also wearing weaves is a great way to grow your natural hair out. Natural hair isn't easy for everyone to take care of especially if you're not good at doing hair in the first place. 4) Synthetic hair is a thing that exists.
Proud of that young lady! I dropped the ball, however, she hit the home run. If you see this meme feel free to share her response.
