I was in the Army Reserves when Barack Obama was elected. For those who don’t know, every military instillation has a row of pictures of the chain of command, with the president getting the first picture followed by the Secretary of Defense and so on and so forth down to the battalion commander. When I saw Barack Hussein Obama’s portrait hung in my drill hall for the first time in place of George Walker Bush I was giddy. And throughout the next five years I was there, I would often look up, see that picture, and get a warm feeling inside. Almost as warm a feeling I had coming back from leave through al-Asad when I saw on the TV that Donald Rumsfeld was no longer my Secretary of Defense. The Iraq War was the issue for me then and seeing the man who channeled that issue reach and remain in the White House is a continuous reinforcement of my belief in this country that I volunteered to serve.
No president is perfect and I don’t expect perfection from anyone, that would be ridiculous. But this president is pretty fucking awesome and I for one will always remember him as a great example of what our elected officials should be.

Since its the primary season, I’ll just say I went to see the candidate I’m voting for in the primary yesterday and he made me weep a little too. Seeing a man who speaks directly about the concentration of wealth in our society being a legitimate candidate for president brought some tears to the eyes of this Nader sympathizer (I’d have been a Nader voter if I ever got my goddam absentee ballot in London that year). That said, we know who the real enemy is and we need to unite against them.
