I’ve heard a lot about Bernie Sanders the past week or two. He isn’t realistic they say; he has no clue how to implement what he proposes they say; he’s just a run of the mill politician they say.
Ever since I’ve started following Senator Bernie I’ve seen and heard a lot about him, and I’m going to have to say I agree. He isn’t realistic; and he has no clue.
But I’ve lived long enough in this country and read enough to know that that is his greatest strength.
Because it wasn’t realistic for a rag-tag group of untrained farmers and trade-workers to take on the army of the greatest empire on earth and gain independence; we had no clue how to do it — but we did it.
It was also unrealistic to free millions of our brothers and sister from slavery at the hands of hateful plantation owners and racists; we had no idea how to do it — But we did it.
It was unrealistic for women to stand up for their right to vote; they had no idea how to get it passed by a male controlled electorate — But we did it.
And it was also unrealistic for millions of brave americans to stand up and fight for the right to decent wages; 40 hour work weeks; the ability to organize unions; and safe work environments; we had no clue how to do it — but they did it.
And it was unrealistic to stand in the face of the greatest economic crisis in history and say we had to raise wages; outlaw the import of cheap foreign goods; provide safety nets for our citizens, by spending millions of dollars we didn’t have, to pay people to work; and to put extreme limits on what banks could and couldn’t do; we had no idea how to do it; nobody had ever done it before — but we did it.
It was also unrealistic to take on the greatest genocidal bully the world had ever seen; that had beaten everyone that tried; and had us surrounded on both sides; we had no clue how to do it — but we did it.
It wasn’t realistic to rebuild a world ravaged by years of war; we had no clue how to do it — but we did it.
It was also unrealistic to spend millions of dollars to fight poverty amongst our citizens by promoting large welfare projects and basic healthcare for our impoverished citizens — but we did it.
And it was unrealistic for millions of americans who were demonized and discriminated against on a daily basis because of the color of their skin to stand up and protest for their rights to vote and use the same facilities as everyone else; we didn’t know how to get it done — but we did it.
And it wasn’t realistic to send men to the moon within 10 years when we didn’t even have a proper functioning space program; we had no clue how to do it — but we did it.
It was unrealistic to elect a black man as President — america is very racist; and it had never happened before. We had no clue how it would happen — but we did it.
And it was very unrealistic to give LGBT people the right to marry — supporting such a thing lost on of our candidates a election 4 years ago — but we did it.
But you know what? America is a nation that is at our best when we are doing things that are unrealistic — and that we’ve never done before.
And that’s why telling me that the policies Bernie wants to enact:
Be it giving people free tuition to college; which many countries in Europe, Asia, and South America Do;
Or Having a Single Payer Health System; which many countries around the world have;
Or breaking up the big banks; which has been done before; even after the recent economic crisis;
Or paying people a decent living wage; which is the same amount they had been being paid 40 years; ago.
Or increasing taxes on the 1% to the same level we had back in the 1980s;
Can’t be done is a bad joke.
You’re telling me that I shouldn’t dream for something better. That wanting progress is unrealistic.
You’re shitting on the dreams and achievements that took hundreds of years and millions of people to achieve.
And that’s not Ok.
Bernie Sanders IS Unrealistic
And That’s Why He Will Do Everything He Says He Will!
