When Bernie was invited to the Vatican: “He invited himself!”
When it turned out Bernie was invited by the Pontifical Academy: “Well, he’s not going to speak.”
When it turned out Bernie was going to speak: “Well, the Pope didn’t have anything to do with this. The Pope’s going to Greece to avoid him!”
When it turned out the Pope had met with him: “Bernie just ran him down in a hotel lobby!”
It’s ridiculous. Here’s what Matt Taibbi has to say about Sanders: “If he's motivated by anything other than a desire to use his influence to protect people who can't protect themselves, I've never seen it.”
He and Pope Francis have the desire to use their stations to help the least among us very much in common. That’s why the Vatican visit is a big deal. And no one expected that the Pope would defy tradition so much as to get involved with a Democratic Primary with an endorsement, but it’s clear to anyone who’s paying attention who’s on Pope Francis’ side about helping the poor.
Because it’s the one who’s always been on the side of the underdog. The one who’s on all our sides, and always has been. The one who “goes to bed at night thinking about how to increase the heating-oil aid program for the poor.”
Go Bernie.
