Bernie Sanders is known for attracting big crowds. He gets them in states he loses and he gets them in states he wins.
But not in Milwaukee today.
Sanders held a town hall and almost no one showed up. Here’s a picture from a CNN producer.
And what was the event?
According to Washington Post reporter John Wagner, it was a “town hall on racial issues.”
You can see how many empty seats there are.
And you can see that there is a good percentage of black people there — but not many people altogether.
Milwaukee is 27% black while Wisconsin is just 6% black.
The city is a major population center in Wisconsin, with 959,000 people out of a total state population of 5.7 million.
It’s going to cast a lot of votes in the Democratic primary.
And Sanders didn’t come anywhere near drawing a crowd.
So after so many Sanders supporters said he’s just having trouble with black voters in the south, this picture suggests that’s simply not so.
It could be his criticisms of President Obama, along with some criticisms of his surrogates, that are turning off black voters.
Or it could be his limited experience with communities of color.
Whatever it is, he hasn’t changed what he needs to change yet.
