In my village, we have a local AM radio station that broadcasts news 24/7. Among their regular features is “traffic and weather on the ones”. (That’s :01, :11, :21, and so on). Tonight, I bring you a few words from one of the station’s traffic guys.
But first, a word from our sponsor.
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either totopcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
TONIGHT’S FEATURE PRESENTATION: THE AUTO GROTTO
The weekday afternoon drive-time shift at 660 News AM Radio is the habitat of Trace St. John, one of the station’s traffic reporters. Officially, Trace works at the 660 News Traffic Centre. Listeners can call or text in traffic conditions (safely, according to local laws), and these tips combined with information from the city’s various traffic cameras, contribute to live reports every 10 minutes. On the ones.
Trace sometimes refers to the Traffic Centre as the Auto Grotto. He has a number of words and phrases that he uses regularly, to make otherwise boring reports more entertaining. I enjoy listening, usually in my car while driving, to see what he will come up with next.
His favourite word plays involve either rhyme, or alliteration. There may be double bonus points for rhyming alliteration, though I haven’t been keeping score.
Following are a few of my personal favourites, from Trace’s greatest hits:
call us in the Auto Grotto
call us on the Commuter Confessional
call us at the Fender Bender Centre call us at the Institute of the Commute
call us at the Diocese of Driving
traffic starts to pack up and back up
crashin' bashin' and smashin'
rear ender fender bender
crush of the rush
crusssssh of the russsssh
chaos on the concrete
problems on the pavement
agony on the asphalt
trouble on the tarmac
photos are flashing
photos flashing furiously
slipping and sliding
cramp on the ramp
pulse of the pavement
polluting the commuting
coagulating the commute
coagulation on Crowchild
creepy crawly Crowchild cruncher on Crowchild
collision crimping Crowchild
it's a slow go on Crow
All a bit of harmless fun that livens up boring old traffic.
What do you hear on local AM radio, anything entertaining?
Or: local AM radio? huh?
TOP COMMENTS FOR MONDAY APRIL 4, 2016
From Crashing Vor:
Certainly MY favorite comment of the day
In “There is a Concerted Effort On This Site To Drag Bernie’s Name Through The Mud. It’s Not Ok”. by cleros, dft gives his/her take on rubber and glue.
From greenbird:
Hot one pertaining to the hottest story on earth right now.
In “’Panama Papers’ a trove of damaging info in what Fusion mag calls the ‘Wikileaks of the mega-rich’” by Meteor Blades, joeknapp shows how an investigation is tracked.
From Otteray Scribe:
Otto de Fe has a pitch-perfect play on words in Jen Hayden's excellent diary “After IN governor signs extreme bill aimed at punishing women, he gets unexpected ‘monthly’ updates” about Indiana's draconian law regulating women's personal health care. Governor Mike Pence signed it, and now he gets more information than he ever expected, and no doubt far more than he wants. Oh well.
From BeninSC:
I am submitting this comment (linked below) from Assaf, in Rachel Colyer’s stunning diary about an immigration success in which Daily Kos members played an important role. In response to a diary appeal Rachel posted in 2015, Daily Kos members rallied to petition Senator Gillibrand’s office to champion Angelo Cabrera’s case for legal immigrant status. The petition was successful (thanks to Sen. Gillibrand’s staff!), and Angelo Cabrera is now a legal immigrant in his chosen country.
I am including a lengthier explanation with this comment submission because we submit our comments in Top Comments, but many times it is not intuitive why we do. This time I am explaining. It is the longest comment submission I have ever made. So be it.
Please, if you don’t read anything else tonight on Daily Kos, read Rachel’s update diary, and watch the video of Angelo Cabrera extending his thanks for the actions of DKos members on his behalf. You won’t regret it.
Then Assaf wrote this brief comment in appreciation. I am including the sentence I admired in the body of the comment nomination, but please do still rec the comment! (And, just as important, please rec Rachel Colyer’s diary!)
Assaf wrote: “Wow, thank you for the reminder that we are capable of much more than primary-season bickering.”
I found that to be a remarkable comment because of its fine perspective. It is empowering and inspiring, but it also takes us out of the primary focus a little bit, back to our purpose and our commission. Getting our chosen candidate(s) elected is just one element of our activism. We are here for PEOPLE. We are here for better lives, for fairness, for justice, for equal and equitable opportunity for all. There are many such fights in our lives, and many need fighting even DURING the primary season.
It is so important to not forget that amid the primary intensity. Our work goes on. Our SUCCESSES continue! And we need them to!
So thank YOU for the reminder, Assaf! Exceptionally well said, indeed. And I hope your fine comment finds resonance beyond me.
From SpamNunn:
[SpamNunn points out that what he found isn’t actually a comment, while quoting a couple of sentences from a diary. I’m in a generous mood tonight so I’m including it, though I could leave it out on a technicality. So I’ll nominate SpamNunn’s comment pointing out the diary extract. — lotac, your editor this evening].
If this was a comment, it would be a Top Comment, from “With all due respect, Kos, the Sanders campaign remains a noble cause” by expatjourno.
