Infuriating would be the best way to describe the meeting with one of CareerSource’s specialists. Ridiculous, even. You see, this person isn’t there to actually help people on SNAP find work. Quite the opposite, in fact. These folks are there to make sure those on SNAP meet the insane requirements every month. That’s right, folks. Every month I need to have 39 job searches and 41 education hours.
The education part is simple enough. It’s just point and click video and multiple choice stuff on Alison where you don’t really learn all that much. It’s the job search part that really pisses me off. How is it that we can have 39 applications, on-site visits or interviews when employers are dealing with applicants in a hands off manner thanks to modern technology? You can’t just cold call an employer and ask if they’re hiring anymore, they just tell you ‘you gotta go to our website.’
Following up can be even more silly given the circumstances mentioned above. HR doesn’t really want to deal with applicants anymore so they just sort applications and resumes via keywords and phrases in such a way where getting hired is near impossible, even at entry level.
So tell me again, how is this supposed to help us? Because from where I’m standing, this isn’t just stupid, it’s downright harmful. That’s just standard procedure for a system that’s utterly tone deaf to adults with disabilities, though.
See you around,
Homer
