Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson is probably going to lose his re-election bid to the guy he defeated six years ago, Democrat Russ Feingold. He'll probably lose because he can't stay out of his own way. Case in point: Whether or not he really endorses Donald Trump. At the moment, he's taking a page from all the other mealy-mouthed Republican senators running for reelection and “supporting the nominee.”
"Let me tell you precisely what I’ve said. I intend to support the Republican nominee. That’s what I’ve said. I intend to support the Republican nominee," Johnson said on Big AM 1380's "The Mike Daly Show" when asked if he was concerned about backing Trump
Later, when asked if he was concerned about endorsing a "wild card," Johnson differentiated between supporting and endorsing a candidate. He noted that he purposefully says, "I intend to support."
"To me, support versus endorse are two totally different things," Johnson said.
That's an entirely new approach to "he who must not be named" from Johnson, who might have finally figured out that the party's nominee is somewhat controversial. (It's also total bullshit according to Merriam-Webster.) See, over the weekend, Johnson was “sympathetic” with Trump, who he said needed some time to get up to speed on things like policy. What's more, he said he spoke with House Speaker Paul Ryan, and his message to the leader—who is so far refusing to endorse Trump—was "Unify, unify, unify, agree, agree, agree."
And just a few weeks ago, he told the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, "I am going to certainly endorse the Republican nominee, and obviously it looks like that will be Mr. Trump." At the end of March, he was enthusiastic about running on the same ticket.
"Stump with Trump?" he quipped when asked if he'd appear on the campaign trail alongside Republican front-runner. "Just because it rhymes: It'd be the Ronald (and) the Donald."
He also said that Trump would help his re-election, because "Trump is running very strong up in the Northwest (part of the state) ... that should also help me a bit too." Apparently he doesn't think The Donald is so helpful anymore. But give him a few days—at this rate he'll have yet another position on Trump.
Please give $3 to help Russ Feingold stand up for Wisconsin again.
