The House is currently considering the energy and water appropriations bill. I wanted to highlight two votes today whose results showed Congress’s continued addiction to fossil fuels.
Jared Polis (CO-02) offered two amendments to reduce the amount the federal government spends on fossil fuel research and development.
The first amendment was to increase funds for energy efficiency and renewable energy by $9,750,000 and decrease funds for fossil energy research and development by $13,000,000.
It failed 167 to 251.
155 Democrats and 12 Republicans voted for it. 228 Republicans and 23 Democrats voted against it.

Polis’s second amendment was to zero out funding for Fossil Energy Research and Development and apply the savings of $645 million to the spending reduction account.
It failed 144 to to 275. 97 Democrats and 47 Republicans voted for it. 194 Republicans and 81 Democrats voted against it.
The only Republicans to vote for both amendments were Jones and Sanford.
Three Democrats who voted against the first amendment voted for the second: Connolly, Peters, and Slaughter.
