I haven’t posted in a very long time but, I must say, Donald Trump has moved me to words.
Like a middle school bully, he brands people: “Liddle Marco”; "Lyin’ Ted”; “Low Energy Jeb”; “Crooked Hillary.” Why, I wonder, has he not been branded?
Maybe, of course, there are just too many options. Trump is such an odious man no single disparaging label can adequately sum him up.
Still, on this Memorial Day, when we honor our veterans, the only thing I can think of is his utter lack of commitment to the values we honor today.
Trump dodges almost everything. He dodges answers to any serious policy question. He dodges contractual obligations through liberal use of bankruptcy laws. He dodges marital responsibilities through pre-nups.
And, of course, during the Viet Nam war he ducked the draft through a mysterious medical deferment. This, despite his claims to fantastic health. This, when others, like Kerry or McCain, were volunteering for service, others were drafted, and others with conscientious objection to the war refused to serve and honorably faced the consequences of their decision.
And, after thirteen years of war in the Middle East, we have tens of thousand of vets who need urgent medical care. The least any decent person can do is to pay their taxes. Not Trump. The last tax returns he disclosed showed that he paid zero federal taxes. He won't release more recent returns, so it is reasonable to conclude that he still is a major tax dodger.
So, today let me offer a little poem that sums up my feelings about Trump’s bid to be Commander in Chief. And, to all vets, thank you for your service.
DODGIN’ DONALD
When Uncle Sam called his name, Dodgin' Donald ducked the game.
"I'm Dodgin' Donald, are you daft? Only losers face the draft!"
"Let the little people fight, I've got bone spurs left and right."
"Viet Nam service was a bitch, thank Heaven I was born so rich!"
"By the way, I soon got healthy, miracles happen when you're wealthy!"
Again we find ourselves at war, and Dodgin' Donald ducks once more.
"I'm dodgin' Donald, not some jackass; only losers pay their taxes!"
"Let the little people pay, it's their kids serving anyway!"
"Vets' health care sure costs a lot. Pay my taxes? I will not!
You must think I'm really stupid--I like those who weren't wounded!"
Dodgin' Donald is runnin' for president, and it's just so painfully evident:
We don't need a Con in Chief; Trump's a dodging, lying, thief.
We can't consign this beloved Land, to his grasping, tiny, hands.
So one and all, our duty's clear--reject the man with the phony hair!
Don't fall for this, his biggest con, just say NO to Dodgin' Don!
