In 1787, in the first Federalist Paper, Alexander Hamilton wrote:
…that of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun by paying an obsequious court to the people, commencing demagogues and ending tyrants.
Additionally, in 1939 W. H. Auden blessed us with these thoughts in this poem:
Epitaph on a Tyrant
Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.
