18-24 turnout went from 38.8 to 57.1
Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party went from their worst showing in history in 2011, with only 34/308 seats, to a strong 184/338 majority under a new map in 2015. A good deal of this can be attributed to this massive surge in the youth vote. Anecdotally, I know that the younger voters around here were ridiculously engaged and exhibiting Trudeaumania, to the detriment of two SPECTACULAR NDP MPs (Megan Leslie and Peter Stoffer) who were defeated in the crimson tide that took every one of the 32 seats in Atlantic Canada. Some other highlights:
First time eligible voters: +17.7 points since 2011, 58.3% vs 40.5%
Voters 25 to 34: +12.3 points since 2011, 57.4% vs 45.1%
Women 18 to 24: +19.6 points since 2011, 60.5% vs 40.9%
Men 18 to 24: +16.9 point since 2011, 53.8% vs 36.9%
Working towards a similar surge in the US would, I’m sure, put the house squarely in play.
