John Kasich and The Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj were the key speakers at the 2016 Radio and Television Correspondents’ Dinner (RTCA) that will be shown in its entirety tomorrow night on C-SPAN at 8pm EST. Minhaj began his satire of the night’s events by talking about the similarities between himself and John Kasich:
We both come from small towns. We both have names no one can pronounce. Both of us will never be President.
He did about 18 more minutes of comedy. Then he said this:
I don’t really know how to pivot here?
He proceeded to deliver a four-minute speech about our need, all of us, to recognize our complicity in the discrimination and bigotry.
Things like this will continue to happen unless we realize that civil liberties are an all or nothing game.
He then went on to point out that the NRA gave over $3.7 million to congressmen and women this past year and he asked:
If 3.7 million dollars can buy political influence, to take lives, if we raise four million dollars, would you guys take that to save lives?
It is an amazing speech. I cannot overstate how good it is.
