In a speech given at the Federalist Society, George Will indicated he had changed his party registration from Republican to unaffiliated
"This is not my party,” he told the audience, the news site PJ Mediafirst reported.
Oh, really? George Will bemoans, and is clearly frightened, of the ascendancy of Donald Trump in that utterly self serving declamation. He professes shock that such a terrible thing could have happened, ignoring his outsized role in creating the mess he now so clearly fears.
He now finds himself unable to support the “people’s choice," Donald Trump.
Presumably some time this weekend he will come out with an endorsement of the only viable contender, that homophobic, faux Christisn bigot, dominionist Ted Cruz, around whose disgusting spoor the Never-Trump movement seems to be coalescing. There isn't much choice.
Instead of that mealy-mouthed mush that Will spoon fed the faithful, let us try some honesty. Let’s try this on for size, Mr. Will.
“My party, the cause from which I have dined high on the hog for decades, lording over everyone who doesn’t agree with our views, has been caught out and exposed for what we are.
“It wasn’t some woman, or African-American, not an immigrant, or a Muslim, or a Jew, not a member of the mainline Protestant churches, not some handicapped child, and not the main stream media, who exposed us.
"We have managed to use our control of the levers of government to quietly but efficiently either frighten or bully them into silence, and a system of dog whistled, code worded racism to keep the base diverted from discovering the real cause of their economic misery, our thieving trickle down economics that sloshed dough on us not by creating more dough, but by divesting it from middle class America. As long as we could keep them convinced that it was some minority that was at fault, we were living large.
“We have, for our personal benefit, twisted the Constitution, tried to introduce Christian Shariah law, gutted the labor laws, the courts, and enabled our money laundering pals on Wall Street to grow fat, along with us ot by governing, not by producing, but by grand theft. We have privatized profit, minimized taxes on those profits, and fully socialized all of the costs of these businesses, leaving poor people and a rapidly impoverishing former middle class to pay taxes to clean up the mess.
“It all profited, and when the people we openly think of as drooling morons–the base–began to catch on, we employed word smiths like me to twist the truth so that someone else was responsible. There is always a new minority to blame. Word smithing pays handsomely.
“The problem was that we overreached so that close to 60 percent of the base, one way or another, is now offended, because we didn't pay up what we promised. More than half of our base is part of that “minority" and that's just women.
"Words have meaning: when you add in all the offended non Republicans, you reach a much higher level.
“We have not just bankrupted the middle class, and the country, but ourselves. For example, we got the Catholics to go along with the death penalty in exchange not for opposing abortion, but by opposing birth control.
“The fact that 90 percent of all American women use birth control during their fertile years didn’t matter.
"I expect that should His Holiness' views be correct, the gnomes are readying a very large fire for all of us. The spectacle of Donald Trimp belittling a handicapped person, while I remain the father of a handicapped son, must have offended God. Sadly, this sort of trashing never makes a dent in our collective consciousness until it affects one of us personally.
“The spectacle of Catholic Paul Ryan, calling for yet another insincere and useless 10 seconds of silence in honor of those murdered by a homophobic bigot—exactly the kind of person my word smithing must have encouraged—while piously crossing himself, must have enraged Him.
“There aren't enough “Hail Marys’ to be chanted for eternity to erase our sins
“We have not just enabled but actively encouraged hate and division, making a fine neat divide between the mostly white and frequently undeserving “us” and the rest of the country.
“We have dog whistled those of our less civil adherents–many of whom have genuine beefs against the social and economic systems, and especially about how we didn't "pay up" as promised--to believe that gun violence is the answer.
“I guess the base isn’t as stupid as I thought.”
You must be very angry at the Donald, who has done and nothing, literally NOTHING, worse than you have. Just more transparent: he dropped the code words and dog whistles. The avidity of the response tells us that he is doing, meaning, acting, apparently exactly the same as you trained them to act.
I’d stay away from Cleveland, if I were you, because your all-white, all-right loser adherents, men mostly, and many with guns, are finally figuring out just who exactly is screwing them over, at least insofar as your efforts to deprive them of the racist, bigoted Tin God. The plurality of them voted for him. So far, the rage is confined mostly to this, but inevitably they'll start to see that you also lied to and cheated them from the beginning, about everything, and that you and your party are responsible for their sorry economic state.
They are going to be looking for justice, the kind they cannot hope to obtain thru the courts.
I don’t advocate or agree with that. However I can suggest this: put away your dinner jackets and fancy ball gowns. You won't be invited to the White House any time soon, and you won't be welcomed anywhere else.
You and your pals are going to one of the lower levels of Dante’s Inferno when you die. Even the pope seems to think so.
I hope you choke.
