I write this for two sets of friends. Those who fought for Sanders but now grudgingly will help Hillary defeat Trump. And those who rage burns the Internet, regardless of Hillary’s opponent. I love them all so hopefully it helps.
Most of the anti-Clinton bias for not being liberal enough seems rooted in an ahistorical analysis. In 1992 we just left a 20 year plus cycle controlled by Nixon, Reagan, and Bush—Carter was an outlier— and built on division (Nation on Atwater's Southern Strategy). The Establishment Press, who exercised tremendous power in a pre-blog era, hated the Clintons because it did not make (control) them (Media v Hillary and The Establishment v Clinton(s)). Clinton owed his victory to Ross Perot’s run, meaning he entered with plurality not majority (Fairvote on 1992 Election).
None of this set stage for transformative liberal presidency but Clinton(s) tried on some levels, Unfortunately, Bill’s executive order ending the military’s anti-gay discrimination emboldened a Right Wing already politically feasting on AIDS victims blood (Radical Rights (then) 30 Year Attack on Gays). Given all Democratic Presidential candidates supported ending the ban, and no Republicans opposed, the ferocity seemed surprising (Wiki on DADT). But then one remembers the 1990s version of our seemingly endless, and perhaps necessary, culture wars (see brilliant Why Conservatives Start Culture Wars and Liberals Win Them).
Don't get me started on the scandals purportedly undermining the liberal movement. The Republicans tasked Ken Starr — along with millions of our tax money — to chase Clinton(s) through Whitewater, Vince Foster, and Monica Lewinsky. Eventually, after wrecking numerous careers and personal lives, Starr proved Bill lied about an affair. Self-righteous Republicans, including Gingrich who screwed his mistress during breaks, impeached Bill. But Bill handedly won reelection and stared down Gingrich over government shutdown. Now even Newsweek went ballistic examining the falsehoods underlying Hillary and Bhengazi (Bhenghazi Biopsy) . Others astutely point similar issues underlying mail scandal (Digby on Email Scandal).
I will admit the Clintons are less liberal than me and many of my friends (same goes for Obama). Nor will I ever forgive them for Welfare Reform, though views differ (Brookings It Worked and Atlantic It Failed) But I accept the Clinton(s) went at it with honorable intentions, as well as support from Labor and other Liberals.
Bottom line, the Clintons (like Obama) win national elections and continue to beat up on Republicans while in office. Don't say it's because the are Republicans. The historical evidence never supported it and events now demand you wash your mouth out with soap. One party openly accepts Trump’s racism, refuses to appoint a Supreme Court Justice, and shuts down the government trying to pass extremist legislation. The other doesn't. Saying otherwise is intellectually lazy.
Embrace Hillary and stick it to Republicans up and down the ticket. Republicans must pay the ultimate price for nominating Trump ( self destruction). Then, as Kos and Meteor Blades brilliantly wrote, we can work together to rebuild the Democratic Party (restore 50 state campaigning, end Super Delegates, and never let New Hampshire/Iowa go first again). All of this will take leap of trust to work with people politically different from many of you. But Forward Thinkers have always embraced diversity (it why we alway win those pesky cultural wars :)).
Let me end with a personal admission. I have always adored the Clintons. They are smart, driven, and (yes) caring. Most importantly they restored Democrats to power. Don't think it matters? Ruth Badet Ginsberg or Anton Scalia; who do want mapping your children's lives?
