No better excuse to get a Purge rolling (the real Stalin kind, not the cool anarchy b-movie kind you silly kids!) than a failed coup. Dude openly called this a “A Gift from God” for a reason:
Turkish prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for 140 Constitutional Court members and 48 members of the Council of State in the wake of Friday night’s attempted coup. Ten arrests have already been made, local media reported.
...
Earlier on Saturday, Turkish authorities relieved 2,745 judges of duty.
...
According to Anadolu news agency, five members were also removed from the HSYK, which is the country’s highest judicial body.

Yes, I know, I’m citing RT News, the propaganda organ of a nation that’s been beefing with Turkey for like 600 years. Still. 2,745 judges!!!
Fethullah Gulen - a moderate Islamic preacher who’s advocated for hilariously radical causes such as interfaith dialogue and multi-party democracy - really organized a military uprising 5,000 miles away in Pennsylvania? Like, for real? Those must’ve been some long Skype calls. Does that passes a smell test for anybody…..?
You know what that explanation sounds like to me?
“Comrades,” he said quietly, “do you know who is responsible for this? Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!” he suddenly roared in a voice of thunder. “Snowball has done this thing! In sheer malignity, thinking to set back our plans and avenge himself for his ignominious expulsion, this traitor has crept here under cover of night and destroyed our work of nearly a year. Comrades, here and now I pronounce the death sentence upon Snowball. ‘Animal Hero, Second Class,’ and half a bushel of apples to any animal who brings him to justice. A full bushel to anyone who captures him alive!”
- Animal Farm, Chapter 6
Turkey is a country with a rich tradition of conspiracy theories concerning the inner working of its government (we basically stole the “Deep State” concept from them lol), so its wholly unsurprising to see people making Reichstag Fire comparisons.
And Ryan Heath from Politico tweeted this out this particularly dire analysis. The point about internet & social media service never being interrupted despite Erdogan’s past history of shutting them down at the slightest provocation is interesting. The points about Turkey sliding into authoritarianism, civil war, and religious extremism are terrifying.
If you thought Turkey was in a bad spot before, just you wait….
