I know that tensions are high with the Democratic Convention beginning today but come on progressives, this is getting ridiculous. After seeing the Republican Convention last week, we don’t have to love Hillary, but my god, Trump as President, puts an end to the American experiment.
I wish that Bernie Sanders had won the primary as well, but he didn’t. While Hillary has her flaws and isn’t my cup of tea on many issues, she is 1,000,000 times better than any Republican in office. Smearing her to exact revenge with lies and silly memes is childish, dumb and downright corny.
The two things that are bothering me at this moment are:
1. Let’s not celebrate Julian Assange, who is such a coward that he is holed up in an embassy and is funded by organizations and countries who benefit from his activity against America. Let us also not celebrate Julian Assange for releasing classified information that he has ZERO right to but lambaste Hillary Clinton for less than awesome handling of her e-mails as Secretary of State. The handling of e-mails as Secretary of State was pretty much handled in the same manner as previous Secretary of State’s, so let’s not go crazy. Also, let’s stop linking and posting right-wing articles and memes because they write something negative about Hillary. When you do that, you lose credibility.
2. Stop booing Senator Sanders because he isn’t taking your advice and is doing the responsible thing by endorsing Hillary Clinton. This movement became a movement because of Senator Sanders, let’s not lose sight of that. Senator Sanders gave a voice to the voiceless and almost pulled off an upset for the ages. But, he didn’t. He came close, though! This man has fought for opportunity for ALL Americans for 50+ years and obviously understands that change is slow and painful, but it eventually comes. By booing Senator Sanders, you are discrediting the man and all he has fought for, and while you don’t have to support Clinton because he told you to, he doesn’t have to listen to you when you tell him not to. He ran a good campaign on the values and ideas many progressives cherish. I will stick with him, follow him and fight to implement the change he has sought in his career.
I don’t love Hillary, but I don’t have to love my President. I have to trust them and believe in their ability not to send us backwards and lead us going forward. I am standing with her; I am voting for her, and I will also hold her accountable while in office. I hope you join in helping to prevent a Trump presidency.
As one poster on DailyKos recently said (I’m paraphrasing): Voting your conscience isn’t progressive, as voting your conscience is selfish as it shows that you care only about yourself. Being a progressive means working to make everyone’s life better, not just yours.
How true that is.
