Just after wrapping up its amazing national convention, the DNC today unanimously elected Representative Grace Meng as Vice Chair. She gave thanks and explained her priorities in the announcement message.
“I am deeply honored to be chosen for the position of Vice Chair and I thank my DNC colleagues for having confidence in my ability to serve in this leadership role,” said Meng.
“Democrats have an ambitious and robust agenda that includes such critical items as immigration reform, gun safety legislation, helping middle class families and much more. I look forward to tackling these measures, and helping to get them enacted with the next President of the United States Hillary Clinton.”
The seat had been vacant since Tulsi Gabbard (HI-2) resigned to join the Bernie 2016 campaign.
The convention highlighted the remarkable diversity of the Democratic party and its winning coalition but also exposed the under-representation of Asian Americans in party and government leadership positions. Rep Meng is the first Asian American Member of Congress from the State of New York, despite large demographic presence in several regions. She is currently the only Asian American Member of Congress from the Northeast region, though several hail from the Western US.
