Country music singer Coffey Anderson posted a safety PSA to his Facebook page 2 days ago. On the face it looks like a great idea, but then things begin to eat away at you . . .
Aint no white boy, aint no white man ever been told (or expected to) sit with splayed outstretched fingers at 11 and 1 on the steering wheel waiting for the cop to approach when he’s been pulled over.
Aint no white boy, aint no white man ever been told not to sit on his wallet because of what a cop might think. (Though he may have been told by a health professional, especially those working with the back — Euro man bags should definitely be a thing IMO, but I digress)
Aint no white boy, aint no white man ever been told he has to make the cop feel safe when pulled over.
Aint no white boy, aint no white man ever been told that he must have his ID papers ready to present at all times.
This is the essence of second class citizenship
This is white privilege.
This video underscores all of this (even if that wasn’t its intention)
Coffey Anderson is DOING NO MORE than any parent of color does with their boys (and girls). Black parents especially. The fact that his video is necessary says much, none of it good.
A white man might say that this all makes sense and is what we all should do, but at the end of the day he(or she) isn’t sitting down with his or her children going over this as if their life depends on it.
