It’s possible that Mr. Trump is not entirely out of control, and will stay in the race until Election Day. On the other hand, he may well escalate until some sort of even-more-outrageous-than-usual behavior forces him to drop out. If the latter, and a new ticket — such as Kasich/Pence — takes over, we need to be ready. And it’s simple. Because the story beneath the Trump story is that all too many Republicans, from those in the highest ranks of government to your next door neighbor, have recently shown their willingness to put party above country.
Bringing this to the front of the political discourse now (right along with Mr. Trump’s latest debacular behavior), matters. Because if we Democrats and Indies lose Mr. Trump, and we are not ready to pivot, we could be in deep doo-doo, since almost any other politician would be so much more credible as a candidate, when compared to Mr. Trump. Even Cruz, even Huckabee, even Carson would be a relief to many Republicans after Trump.
So as much as we may relish bashing The Donald, we need to begin or continue to show our dismay and astonishment at the party which would not renounce him after the Khan family debacle, and the many other indications of his unsuitability for the top office in the land. We need to communicate the current moral bankruptcy of the party as a whole, otherwise I fear that the results of a Trump-Meltdown will bring us perilously close to a winning Kasich/________ ticket… Anyone out there have thoughts on this?
