Hillary Clinton's 11-point lead in Pennsylvania over Donald Trump is having some downballot echoes. Democrat Katie McGinty is leading incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey 48-44, cementing the 47-43 lead she had last month in the NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll.
One pollster, Terry Madonna from Franklin & Marshall, found McGinty with a 39-38 lead last week, but sees a significant coattail effect at work.
"When I looked at these polls, basically what I saw was, when Hillary Clinton did better, the bigger the lead, the better that McGinty did — we're seeing a coattail effect," Madonna said. […]
McGinty has not scored too many direct hits on Toomey so far, but Madonna said she may not have to. Clinton's coattails may be enough.
"What does McGinty have to do? If Clinton hypothetically wins the state by 11 or 12 points, just ride the wave -- ride the wave," he said.
A few direct hits on Toomey wouldn't hurt either. A pretty obvious one right now would be his refusal thus far to dump Trump.
