Reading the alt-right’s attempt at self-definition (in www.dailykos.com/...), they maintain that (a) race is not a social construct but a durable (biological, I guess) reality, and (b) Hispanics are fundamentally different from Europeans. Here’s Merriam-Webster’s definition of Hispanic (www.merriam-webster.com/...):
1: of or relating to the people, speech, or culture of Spain or of Spain and Portugal
2: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the United States;especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin
So “Hispanic” used broadly includes people currently living in the Iberian portion of Europe (Spain and Portugal), and used narrowly, is all about people who descended from Iberians. If race is an enduring thing and not a transient social construct, even the descendents of Iberians living in Latin America must still be of their Old World race. So when did Iberians stop counting as Europeans? Was it before Trajan (born in Spain) served as the Emperor of Rome, or after? I’m confused.
