No matter what Donald Trump does or says, those who plan to vote for him don’t seem to care; they don’t hesitate in their support; they don’t change their minds when he says crazy, insane things; they stand with Trump no matter what he does or says; no matter how offensive his actions, how racist his comments, how many people he insults; and how deeply he offends the men and women who served our country in the military by stating how he will reinstate torture; kill the families of terrorists; Carpet bomb ISIS while ignoring all the innocents around them; insult Gold Star families; and believe me, as Trump says, I could go on and on with all the stupid things he has done and said.
Does it have anything to do with the fact that the large majority of Trump voters are white, like me? Being white, I believe that I can raise this question without the problem of ethnicity getting in the way.
If I understand Trump’s appeal, he wants to make America great again, as though there is something seriously wrong with the country as it is today. The only difference between the America of today and the population of America at many other presidential elections in the past, is that we are now a more diverse country than ever before, and we are going to be even more diverse in the future.
One day soon, white Americans will not be in the majority. Is it that simple? Trump followers believe somehow he will bring back the 1950s where white Americans ruled America and many minorities had little or no rights to go to white schools, buy property in white neighborhoods, be hired fairly by companies and on and on and on?
Trust me, having lived through the 1950s, I don’t want to return to those days.
