Joe Pakootas has dates set to debate Cathy McMorris Rodgers. The first week of October there will be back to back debates. The second one to be recorded by the Spokane PBS station, KSPS, broadcast later in the evening and rebroadcast the following week.
My campaign has been working with my opponent over the last several weeks to schedule debates throughout the district. So far we have 3 debate commitments from my opponent:
-October 5- Washington State University, 7pm, hosted by the Foley Institute
-October 6- KSPS recorded debate (no live audience to be broadcast at 9pm that same night & 7pm October 10)
-October 25- Walla Walla, 6pm, hosted by the WW Chamber of Commerce
Gonzaga University has scheduled a debate for October 17th, but my opponent has not accepted.
In August when we accepted my opponent’s invitation to participate in 3 debates we made it clear that all debates should: be free and open to the public; taped and made available for broadcast; not conflict with the presidential debates; and be hosted by neutral organizations and agreed upon between both candidates.
It's good to see that Joe will have the opportunity to share the stage with McMorris Rodgers. This information has just been announced, so we'll know more later.
My campaign is committed to participating in debates/forums that are free and open to the public. In 2014 we participated in a debate sponsored by an organization that charged an attendance fee. A generous Pakootas supporter bought 300 tickets for all that wished to attend, but when these voters got to the door, they were told they needed to buy new tickets. Having to pay to watch a debate is neither fair, just, or acceptable. We do not believe anyone should have to pay to become informed in order to participate in our democracy, a principle that the McMorris Rodgers campaign told us they share. I am working hard to make sure people all around the 5th Congressional District get a chance to participate in an open public debate near them. More details about each of these debates will be released shortly.
