Water Dance
-
A twisted road leads straight to the house.
-
Through the blanketed doorway is a dirt floor covered with rushes and rugs.
-
Light through the leaves is it’s own cinema on the tarp
-
stretched over arches of ironwood poles.
-
Seven fires burned in in a clearing across the road.
-
In a dress covered with bells, a girl danced.
-
Others stamped the earth while men drummed and sang.
-
Rain fell as she danced.
-
Not far from there, the soil devours the last remnants of a farm.
-
Beavers reclaimed it’s gentle stream. The well is silted in.
-
Bits of rust and glass mark the place where they grew potatoes.
-
New pines edge in where the stumps were pulled.
-
Water covers the old pasture. Shoe-tail slaps.
-
Under the ripples he flies to his lodge.
-
In a jingle dress she hops from one foot to the other.
-
Kinnickinnic smoke fills hollow places between pine needles
-
She presses the hawkweed into the red sand and makes the land hum.
