Building a wall between Mexico and the United States, mass deportation, ideological tests for immigrants, and keeping the wrong sorts of people out of the country have been the core of Donald Trump’s campaign since before there was a Donald Trump campaign. In fact, Trump’s immigration policy is the only detailed policy he has presented. He has nothing else.
So this may come as a surprise:
Camerota interjected as Pierson attempted to explain, remarking, "This is a big deal, the idea that he might actually be open to legal status—"
"It's actually not," Pierson shot back. "Immigration is not showing to be a top priority for Americans in this election cycle."
Why is the only issue Trump has talked about from Day One suddenly a non-issue? Because Trump can’t stay on message from one day to the next—or even from minute to minute.
Answer No. 1:
When asked if some of the 11 million undocumented immigrants could stay, Trump replied, "It could be but what’s going to happen is if you’re going to be a citizen, you’re going to leave and you're going to have to come back.
Answer No. 2:
[Guiliani] said on Sunday during an interview with CNN that Trump "would find it very, very difficult to throw out a family that has been here for 15 years and they have three children, two of whom are citizens. That is not the kind of America he wants."
When asked about Giuliani's comments, Trump responded, "He’s 100% right. It’s very difficult. It’s a very difficult thing to do."
Answer No. 3:
"There will be no amnesty. Our message to the world will be this: You cannot obtain legal status or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country,” he said then. "Under my administration anyone who illegally crosses the border will be detained until they are removed out of our country and back to the country from which they came."
The real answer? There is no answer. What Donald Trump is saying is that Donald Trump actually doesn’t have an immigration policy. He’s going to leave it for some undetermined time in the future.
Because it’s not a top priority.
