I’m a lurker, not a poster, but wanted to share a chilling and sad experience I just had on the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Three professional women who were on their way to a conference in the City boarded and began a lively conversation about where they were headed, etc. I don’t know what profession they were in exactly, but some of the things they discussed made me think they were teacher trainers or worked for the Department of Education. After a while, one of them brought up the Presidential campaigns and another said, “for the first time in my life, I’ve decided not to vote this year.” Another said, “yes, same for me!” One said, “I would vote for her husband, but not her, because she lies too much.” They didn’t mention much about Trump, but they did say that they couldn’t vote for Hillary because every story about her was another one of her lies revealed. I was horrified by the conversation and wanted to try to find a way to jump in and politely discuss how the news media and the Republican talking heads are painting a false picture of Hillary, but we were at their stop and they all jumped off.
The false narratives of Hillary’s wrongdoings, like last week’s AP story, are having a chilling effect on voters who you would think are her perfect target demographic — middle-aged, professional, African-American, politically-engaged, Brooklyn-based women. I’m not trying to say the sky is falling or be a downer in any way, but if Hillary can’t get her positive message out to these women and if the only thing they hear about her is that she’s a liar, something is clearly wrong.
I know there aren’t as many political ads in New York as there are in other states because we are such a lock for Hillary, but for far too many voters, the only things they see about Hillary are negative. I never see nearly as many stories about her surrogates talking about how amazing she is compared to the non-stop Trump blabbermouths who talk so much and are on t.v. so much that we are no longer shocked by what they say. Shock wears off, but suspicions linger much, much longer.
