Betsy DeVos is tapped for Secretary of Education for the incoming Trump administration, following the seemingly unspoken stipulation that you be the antithesis of your given role. DeVos is no exception: she doesn't really believe in secular public schools. When asked in an older interview whether Christian schools should continue to rely on philanthropic dollars as opposed to taxpayer money through vouchers, DeVos said that she believes there’s not enough “philanthropic dollars in America to fund what is currently the need in education…[versus] what is currently being spent every year on education in this country…Our desire is to confront the culture in ways that will continue to advance God's Kingdom."
A pro-charter school billionaire who wants to use taxpayer money to fund private and religious schools MIGHT not be the best pick for Secretary of EDUCATION. What’s reassuring, though, is DeVos’ opinion on wildlife, which is logical and rational: she says that we might need guns in schools because of bears.
When Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) asked whether she supports equal accountability for all schools that receive taxpayer funding, she danced around the question because she didn’t understand it, repeating the same phrase over and over again to try to stifle him. She did understand that she really knows nothing about the subject matter, which is why she doesn’t commit to an answer, a tactic we’ve seen used many times by president-elect Trump. There’s one more layer that really makes her an astute candidate - her family has made contributions to groups that support “conversion therapy” for gay people, which has been banned for kids in California. We have a lot to look forward to.
