Apologies for the belated MI Kossacks post!
Dexter Persists — Protest against Rep. Tim Walberg (R, MI-07), Saturday, March 11
TOMORROW, Indivisible Dexter is hosting a peaceful protest outside a church where GOP Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-07) will be speaking to a private group. From Anne Savage, one of the organizers:
Indivisible Dexter sent a formal request to Walberg to meet with us after his event. Yesterday he declined so we are taking our group to him. We will be doing a quiet and peaceful march across from the parking lot of the church where he will be speaking.
Walberg rode the Obamacare/Tea Party wave back into office in 2010, after Mark Schauer had served for one term. I would like nothing better if an uprising against his hateful and cruel stance against universal health care swept him out of office in 2018. The time to start that movement is NOW.
Please JOIN US if you can:

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II in Flint, Monday, March 13!
IT’S TIME WE ALL STAND UP FOR RACIAL JUSTICE AND A MORAL AGENDA: A TALK WITH REVEREND DR. WILLIAM J. BARBER II
That’s the headline for the announcement of Rev. Barber’s speech, co-sponsored by Michigan Faith in Action and the ACLU of Michigan. It’s free, but this is the link to RSVP.
Monday, March 13, 6-8 p.m.
Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church
3502 Lapeer Road
Flint, MI 48503
I do plan to attend. If other Kossacks will be there please speak up so we can at least say hello. Whether or not you can get to the lecture, Rev. Barber’s message is extremely important and relevant. In case you didn’t hear his address to the Democratic National Committee, or even if you did, it’s worth more than one listen.
Rev. Barber and the Moral Monday movement in North Carolina constitute the cutting edge of the Third Reconstruction. I see encouraging signs for the prospect of bringing the Moral Monday movement to life here in Michigan now. If that appeals to you, please make sure you let me know what you would be willing to do to bring it to fruition.
Eastern Michigan University and Ypsilanti Residents Observe a “Day Without Women,” Wednesday, March 8
What did you do on Wednesday to observer International Women’s Day? Some could participate actively, and some had to take part in spirit or via symbolic gestures; we have a long way to go before all women have the kind of social and economic security to be able to take part without significant risk.
As readers in MI will know, we had quite the windstorm Wednesday, of several hours’ duration. That probably reduced participation, but about 150 women (and a few men) gathered on the campus of Eastern Michigan yesterday for a rally and short march across campus.
If you have photos or reportage from other events around the state on Wednesday, please feel free to supply them in the comments.
