The political fallout (reportedly unexpected by the Trump administration?!) of firing FBI Director James Comey is just starting to materialize and it’s essential that pressure be put on our elected representatives to ensure that the truth comes out even without Comey heading the FBI.
First and foremost, we must each call, fax, or write to our representatives and senators and demand the formation of an independent commission to conduct the Russia investigation. Republicans, like Representative Justin Amash below, know intellectually this is a crisis of government so put their thumbs to the screws.
Second, we must keep close watch on what the DoJ does next. The dismissal of James Comey does not necessarily end the Russia investigation, there is a team of 20 FBI agents overseeing the investigation in DC and Deputy Director McCabe, who will oversee the Bureau in the interim, is an Obama appointment. We must demand the appointment of a special prosecutor from Rod Rosenstein to ensure the DoJ doesn’t kill the investigation at the prosecution level. Also, any changes at the US Attorney’s office of Virginia’s Eastern District or the National Security Division of the Department of Justice would be proof of a coup by the Trump administration as Comey was working with prosecutors from these two offices. I want to put this out there and please keep that information in the back of your minds as this story unfolds.
Third, it is reported that James Comey will still be invited to testify to the Senate in a closed session tomorrow. We must continue to demand that the Senate and House find out exactly what he knows that could have prompted this termination. Call, fax, or write.
Finally, some reports suggest that Comey found out by watching the news that Trump was terminating him and had to start preparing his resignation. If that’s true I feel sympathy for James Comey. How cowardly of the Trump administration to fire him without having to face him as they do it.
