The billionaire funder of Trump's campaign, of Breitbart, and of the growing racist alt-right movement is now aiming his checkbook at Trump's newest enemy—fellow Republican Sen. Jeff Flake.
Robert Mercer, a reclusive hedge fund billionaire who was intimately involved in Trump’s rise and helped to bankroll his 2016 campaign, is contributing $300,000 to a super PAC supporting former state Sen. Kelli Ward, who is challenging Flake in a Republican primary next year. [...]
A longtime Trump critic, Flake has made waves with the release of his new book, “Conscience of a Conservative.” He argues that his party is in denial about the Trump presidency and blames the GOP for his rise.
It's not clear whether Mercer is dumping money toward unseating Flake because Flake is deemed insufficiently devoted to gutting American health insurance reforms or because Flake wrote a book suggesting that maybe having crazy white nationalist nutjobs in charge of the Republican Party isn't the glorious future past Republicans had envisioned.
But, unlike Trump, Robert Mercer is a "real" billionaire and isn't a tightwad. The Mercer family wants America to be more like Breitbart, and are willing to pony up the dough to make that happen. It looks like that currently means getting rid of the Republicans who, however flaccidly, object.
