NBC’s Megyn Kelly experiment hit a major milestone today when her new morning television show Megyn Kelly Today made its premiere. Reports say executives have been very nervous about this show’s performance after her first NBC show, Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly, had pitiful ratings—and if today’s any indication, their worries may be very justified.
Her first show featured actors from the historic show Will & Grace, which broke boundaries through its portrayal of gay people in mainstream television and has a 2017 reboot. And during the interview segment, Kelly surprised a “super fan” by inviting him to meet cast members from the show. While it’s a nice gesture, Kelly quickly made an awkward “joke” many viewers didn’t find funny.
It may have been a “joke,” but it’s important to remember she used to work for the notoriously conservative Fox News. It’s a network that constantly pushes vile inaccuracies to justify their bigotry and discrimination. It’s possible many of her old viewers do believe that being gay is a choice. How do we know whether she is one of them, too? If this is her attempt at being relatable, then this is likely going to be quite an awkward ride.
