This isn't a new concept. The argument has been made before: It thrives on attention...so starve the beast.
But realistically, how do you do that? We have a need to stay informed. To stay vigilant. It's virtually impossible to fully deny attention to the person in the Chief Executive seat. So that’s that, eh?
But wait! What if there were a ceremonial period in which our vigilance was not needed? What if all we had to offer during this time was outrage, snark and tears? Unless you are a huge Lee Greenwood fan, there’s really nothing to see anyhow.
Would we be willing to forgo all of that to send a definitive message of dissent? I sure would...but the catch is that we need all of us to make this work.
It’d be a hell of a team building exercise too, wouldn't it?
So here’s the proposal:
72 hours
10am Eastern Jan 18
to
10am Eastern Jan 21
- No mentions of "its"name.
- No memes about "it”.
- No blogging about "it".
- No clicks to any online content about "it".
- No watching of any official government ceremonial events on TV.
- For real pros — no mention of "its" name in conversation or fever dreams.
All of this for three days solid — right up to the marches on the 21st (at which point we march, watch, blog and scream about "it" like banshees).
Maybe someone comes up with a better title for this protest. Maybe a hashtag or two emerges. Maybe we push the idea out all over the net.
I dunno...it's late now, so I’ll open this idea to the choir. We’re all pretty good at staying wired and speaking out. Can we bring ourselves to detach? It could be a deafening silence.
Thoughts?
