The phrase, 'Thank you, Mr. President', is due to be retired in only one day. May I please write it just once more, in loud flaming caps, before it sinks into the realm of myth?
THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT.
Now we go ungently into that DT universe, the Delirium Trumpens. God save us.
There is a fitting tribute to the president’s humanity and his care for us as people, a must read in the New York Times Magazine about the White House group that reads Mr. Obama’s mail and selects 10 a day to go into a purple folder in his daily briefing for him to read. To Obama With Love, and Hate, and Desperation . A very tough and demanding job, and the staffers do it out of love and often have need of counseling. Some of the letters quoted had me literally in tears. I won’t (because I can’t do it justice) quote it. A beautiful piece of journalism. And somehow redemptive.
I will quote someone else, from long ago, about thanks:
If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.
Meister Eckhart (1260-1328)
Read that article and go forth to preserve and further Obama’s legacy. A ‘thank you’ may be enough for our personal redemption, but real action is needed for our country’s.
