Here's another exchange an asshole trump supporter ‘friend’ and I had last week about the Secretary of Education nominee. Did I misunderstand any part of the conversation? Or is the asshole just ‘gaslighting’? (not entirely sure of the definition of ‘gaslighting’)

RD I think she's perfect! School choice is the future of public education...
BA — image was here…. wouldn’t copy
RD Yes, it is a monopoly… — image was here…. wouldn’t copy
BA Does that mean that we should also have choice to break up the monopolies that our local fire department and police hold? Should we go back to the days where they would watch your house burn down if you hadn't paid your fee?
RD I'm an old school Milwaukee Socialist. Government can provide a necessary product or service until the Market economy can provide it. Then government must gracefully exit the market.
This is what is happening in education country wide.
KC Some things just don't work in a for profit model. Education, Health Care, Law enforcement, corrections and fire departments don't work when making a profit is the primary goal.
RD School choice is working just fine. We sent Franny and John to parochial schools all 12 grades because we could pay for it. School choice is for those parents that cannot afford the extra expense.
BA "School choice" is refering to tax payer money going to for profit schools. Most families cannot afford to pay for private school so we, as a society, fund public schools to make sure every child is educated regardless of background. In Iowa each chi...See More
RD Public schools have failed when compared to charter schools and other choice funded schools because the purpose of public education is to meet the demands of teachers unions - not educate kids.
RD — image was here…. wouldn’t copy
BA If you believe that the teachers' union's number one goal isn't protecting and educating students, you've been reading propaganda.
BA This info graphic has no context. It needs a date and data pool to be valid
RD My mother is a retired school teacher... Ask her (SD)
BA I've been a member of a teacher's union for 11 years.
KC Also teachers unions have very little control over how schools function, they fight to give teachers a fair wage and benefits. Which they still don't get most of the time.
BA And now my 15 min lunch is over so I need to wrangle kids. We will have to continue this later
RD So you have a personal interest in the largess the teachers union enjoys at taxpayer expense...
Nchristine So, you're perfectly fine with your tax dollars paying for a muslim centered high school?
RD Find one...
Nchristine www.k12academics.com/...
Islamic Schools | Des Moines, Iowa | K12 Academics

RD Why are you bigoted against Muslims? I have no problem with it...
Nchristine Taxpayer money is not for religious schools - any religion
RD That's your opinion and you're entitled to it... It's not mine.
Nchristine Then you can pay the 1429.44 part of my property tax for education. Public education is for education, not religion (unless it's a class on comparative religion/philosophy). If you want your child to have a religious education, you pay for it.
RD Why do you hate poor kids? I paid for it out of my pocket - poor people can't. Don't you care?
Nchristine You did not pay for your primary or high school out of your own pocket. I don't hate poor kids - I grew up as a poor kid in the US Military. I have no problem paying taxes for public education, especially since I don't have any children. I don't pay for religious centered schools. Should public schools become religious schools, I'll figure out a way not to pay the taxes.
RD Oy veh... You're just a pile of prejudices... Don't like poor kids, don't like religious people, what else? School Choice gives poor kids a chance to learn and grow in a better environment - why do you hate them so much?
Nchristine Talk about twisting words - prove that I'm prejudice against anyone.
RD School Choice takes kids out of failing schools giving them a chance to learn. You are going to deny them this just because some of the schools have a religious affiliation? This is both cruel and bigoted...
KC Why not fix the failing school instead?
Nchristine Thanks KC, that's better than what I'm thinking right now.
RD That's been tried for decades... And has not worked. Time to start over - do it for the children!
Nchristine DeVos wants schools to be US History according to the Bible, Human Biology according to the Bible and anything else is not acceptable to her. She's not for school choice, but dominionist religionist. She's on record as saying that not all kids really need to get any type of education. She's on record for not wanting to help kids with disabilities (which would mean that you wouldn't have deserved an education according to her) Most of the charter schools in Detroit, where she set herself up at, are failing. Charter schools are not the panacea you think that they are. There have been numerous studies that have demonstrated that the majority do absolutely no better than the public counterpart. Now, if choice was a non-profit magnet school for trade arts, or arts, or science that was open to anyone that met the academic requirements, I might be open to that......
RD You are conflabulating her personal views with the requirements for the position.
Now your just making stuff up...
You've run out of arguments...
Nchristine What am I making up?
RD Your last post is completely false - find it in the fever swamps of dailyKos?
Nchristine www.washingtonpost.com/...
RD Washington Post, like the New York Times, is no longer a trusted source of information.
Nchristine What is a trusted source of information then?
RD Try RealClearPolitics.com. Their format is to provide two article links framing each issue. Good stuff!
BA okay, I'm back. what I miss? Alright, I'll just restate my point from before. Public schools are held accountable by local voters and tax payers. The community elects a school board to over see everything from hiring/firing teachers to every inch of the budget. Legally these things must be discussed in meetings that are open to the public. The minutes for these meetings are published monthly and can be found on the district website. The public is always welcome to come to meetings or you can write, call, email your school board representative if you feel they are not representing the best interest of the public. If a school needs money for something like building a new school, the bond must be voted on by the community. If the school runs a surplus then the local property tax is lowered. This actually happened in my previous school district. Further more, public schools must follow miles of regulations and laws. For example, teachers must be certified and must pass an FBI background check etc.
Charter schools can hold private meetings, they can skirt laws. They can hire people to be teachers even if they do not have the proper certification and so they can pay them far less. They can also take only the highest scoring students and turn low scoring students away. And, they can make bank doing it with almost no accountability or oversight.
RD No, they are not. As demonstrated in Wisconsin by Act 10 high taxes are not necessary for good schools. This crisis was generated by the state Teachers Union buying state Democrat politicians with tax dollars. This is a form of graft and detrimental to excellent education because more and more dollars are diverted from the students to satisfying the greed of the Teachers Union. The resulting deficits was destroying the state economy as Democrat politicians kept raising taxes to buy off their clients, the primary one being the Teachers Union.
BA you know what? fuck you. I signed a contract for $27,000 for my first year of teaching. I could barely cover my rent and my student loan. I have met a lot of teachers and I've never met one who got into the profession because of greed.
RD Nasty...
BA yup, just another nasty woman
RD But cute…
Did I misunderstand what was written? I don’t think so. I really need to just not respond to anything he ever posts. I did ‘unfriend’ him right after the election.
