This diary is short and sweet. Click on the title to get Robert Kuttner’s HuffPost column, Impeaching Trump. Below is an excerpt:
There is only one constitutional way to remove a president, and that is via impeachment.
What’s needed is a citizens’ impeachment inquiry, to begin on Trump’s first day in office.
The inquiry should keep a running dossier, and forward updates at least weekly to the House Judiciary Committee. There will be no lack of evidence.
The materials should be made public via a website. The inquiry should be conducted by a distinguished panel whose high-mindedness and credentials are, well, unimpeachable.
There needs to be a parallel public campaign, pressing for an official investigation. For those appalled by Trump, who wonder where to focus their efforts, here is something concrete―and more realistic than it may seem.
I’ve followed the attempts to 1) recount the vote; 2) eliminate the Electoral Vote; and 3) recruit faithless electors with some dismay. Normally, I am a let-1,000-flowers-bloom person, but I found these futile and even counterproductive efforts.
I’ve thought that what is needed is:
- A careful examination of progressive Democrat values;
- A commitment to betterment for all;
- A clear message of points 1 and 2 in language everyone can understand; and
- A 50-state strategy to rebuild the Democratic Party from the ground up, that includes both hyperlocal local, state, and national offices.
- Unified opposition to the Trump administration
Kuttner’s argument for an citizens’ impeachment strategy works for me as a realization of unified opposition. I like it. I’d like to feed that website he suggests.
Would you? Would it make sense to host it on DK? (I think so, resoundingly so! — Opportunity to have new folks find us and to get donations of both $ and information.)
Thanks for reading, Roadette
