All this time, we’ve been comparing Trump and Bannon to Hitler. Yes, they are racists (or at least they associate themselves with racists). Bigotry, sure. Homophobia, check. Male chauvinists of course.
A lot of comparisons with fascists are getting kicked about. They’re all true, of course, but there’s something much, much worse, here and it’s been hidden in plain sight, just like Marshall McLuhan predicted. Fascism at least pretended to be a coherent ideology. I believe that this is worse.
They are cannibals.
Hungry for raw power, and attention, and adulation. But mostly power. And they do not care about anything else. Simply put, they will eat you. Alive. That’s what they’re doing, right now, to our country, to our constitution, to humanity itself. They are eating. They are feeding their vile, disgusting, insatiable, indiscriminate appetites. If we don’t stop this madness, we’re on their menu. Maybe not today’s, but possibly tomorrow’s.
Anyone who thinks that we’ll be saved by the infighting is being dangerously naive. In the end, we’ll still be left with...the most powerful cannibal left standing. Who cares whether it’s Trump, or Pence, or Bannon, or Conway?
They’re cannibals.
You might think this is an overly broad use of the term. Perhaps (although I really wouldn’t want to put this to the test — remind me never to get stuck on life raft with these people). But really, how else are we describe someone who, when they see a human being, sees not another beautiful, unique precious soul, but a resource to be consumed and discarded?
By the time we’ve steeled ourselves for 1984, we’ll be knee deep in Lord of the Flies.
After writing this diary, I discovered I was more on point than I could have imagined. From last August:
On Monday night, 19 year old Austin Kelly Harrouff of Florida went homicidally berserk for reasons yet unknown. He stabbed to death a random couple twice his age, also attacking a neighbor who tried to intervene. Then Austin began biting the dead man's face off.
Horrible new details are out today. When Austin's frightened mom called 911 to report his erratic, menacing behavior with family, she told the emergency dispatcher that her son was wearing a Donald Trump “Make America Great Again” hat when he wandered off into the night ranting about being a superhero.
God help us all.
