It’s been more than three weeks since Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, and millions of Americans there continue to fight for their very survival. Food supplies are limited, what water is available must be boiled, which is rather difficult given that nearly 90 percent of its people are without power. The death toll may be as high as 81 at last count. And with all that in mind, here are a few results from a poll measuring “the public’s awareness of the damage to Puerto Rico and their assessment of the federal government’s response.” Now, bearing in mind that 88 percent of all respondents in this poll acknowledge the damage in Puerto Rico is “very severe,” consider this:
- Asked if “you think that most people in Puerto Rico … are getting the help they need,” 56 percent of Republican voters said yes.
- Asked if the federal government was doing enough “to restore electricity and access to food and water,” 74 percent of Republican voters said yes.
- Asked if the federal government’s response “has been too slow, too fast, or has it been about right,” 75 percent of Republican voters said “about right.”
The cancer that is eating the Republican Party isn’t just in Washington.
