UT03 Special Election, Nov 7th, last chance to flip a house seat blue! Please help with final push!
My Republican opponent, John Curtis, has stated that he is “squarely behind” the agenda of Donald Trump, and yet that he can ignore the “distractions” of the man himself.
In a tweet yesterday, I challenged him.
Donald Trump is the personification of his agenda. Many of his positions reflect his attitude of white superiority. Among these are his support for a border wall, his disdain of Sanctuary Cities, and his curtailing of the DACA program.
Now he blames Puerto Ricans for their fate after Hurricane Maria. His response to the devastation on their island was slow in coming, poorly deployed and inadequate. To tell American citizens that “FEMA won’t be there forever” at a time when most Puerto Ricans still have neither electricity nor clean drinking water is the epitome of negligence and insensitivity.
His statements after the Charlottesville violence about both sides bearing equal responsibility are perhaps the most acutely revealing of all. A woman, Heather Heyer, died there at the hands of a White Supremacist. The alt-right, Neo-Nazis, and Klan members have been emboldened and empowered by the rhetoric of Donald Trump.
Donald Trump promulgated the myth that Barrack Obama was not born in the United States and was therefore not a legitimate U.S. president. Since taking office, he has persistently undermined, repealed, and reversed many of Obama’s accomplishments as America’s first African American president. This process is ongoing with yesterday’s executive order to further weaken the ACA, and the announcement that ACA subsidies to low income people will be arrested. Why this campaign to eradicate the legacy of Obama? Because Mr. Trump is, and always has been, a racist.
My tweet asked Mayor John Curtis to take a stand against this racism by choosing Lady Liberty over tiki torches representing centuries of torment for minorities. Instead of affirming that he, too, despises racism, his campaign accused me of calling him a White Supremacist and characterized my tweet as one of desperation for a failing campaign.
On the contrary, I’m not the candidate who put out Facebook Ads in support of a border wall and against sanctuary cities that had to be taken down in haste when those who had viewed Curtis as a moderate candidate were disgusted. I’m not the one who also took down a facebook post in which he dug a deeper hole for myself. I’m not the one who has gone from Democrat to Moderate, to Right Winger in the space of ten years.
I don’t know what John Curtis stands for or against. But I know what I stand for. It’s all Americans, not just white ones. I will have the courage to defy Donald Trump, both the man and his agenda. It is increasingly apparent that my opponent will capitulate to the GOP and their poverty of ideas.
Elect Dr. Kathie Allen to Congress next month!
