Not content with lying about conversations with widows of dead soldiers, Trump has now well and truly stuck his middle finger up at the military by insisting that generals were to blame for the deaths of green berets in Niger.
Asked if he authorized the mission, Trump said, “No, I didn’t, not specifically. I have generals that are great generals. These are great fighters; these are warriors. I gave them authority to do what’s right so that we win. That’s the authority they have. I want to win. And we’re going to win.”
Trump is no stranger to controversy, but blaming the military for the death of soldiers is something of a new low even for Trump. Gifted at misdirection as he is, Trump has seemingly turned himself to a zero with the military this week after enjoying some popularity with military personnel when he first ran for office. But now many will see Trump for what he is and will be deeply unhappy with the way he has conducted himself thus far and especially this week.
Trump was himself a draft dodger and this fact will not help his case with the military community either. As commander in chief Trump should set the tone and support the military, but fearing for his own skin he reverted to type in blaming the victims for their own downfall.
Trump's week from hell continues, but for those watching on it appears to be business as usual from someone who seemingly can't even tell what the truth is himself. His constant provable lies and now the withdrawal of support from even members of his own party mean that the beleaguered president surely has a very short time left in office. Many will hope that for the good of the World that it is time to tell Trump “you’re fired”.
