First, both these KKK/Confederates and Nazi-wannabes either do not understand or do not want to understand the modern science of genetics, which has shown that what we call “race” is a social construct with no basis in the human organism. Racial characteristics really are no more than skin deep, basically adaptations to the local level of UV (skin color = melanin content = protection of DNA from UV damage) or adaptations to climate (nose shape, eye fold shape, fat distribution, etc.) with no major effect upon or correlation with any other human characteristics like intelligence or psychology. The basis of their racist credo is old, obsolete pseudo-scientific nonsense not deserving of serious consideration in a modern society.
Secondly, I have come to the opinion that both the KKK/Confederates and Nazis do not deserve free speech rights. I realize this is an extraordinary assertion, but hear me out. The KKK are a domestic terrorist group, trying to advance their political aims through fear and murder of opponents. (Modern day as well as past, e.g. Dylan Roof & James Fields just in the past 2 years.) Neo-Confederates are simply KKK without the hoods, but racism aside, neo-Confederates are adhering to and flying the flag of traitors who took up arms against the United States & fought battles until subdued. The same holds true for Nazis, who were foreign enemies. While the original Nazi Party is no more and in fact is banned in Germany, for some reason the US tolerates these adherents of our global enemies. Being an active member of the KKK, Nazi, or other hate group is adequate cause for expulsion from the US military. These racist views promote the idea that certain human beings do not deserve to be treated as human beings, endangering their lives as well as their civil rights. I would argue that promoting these causes or groups with philosophies antithetical to that of democracy itself as well as the United States laws and Constitution means they do not deserve free speech protection. How can a country allow citizens the freedom to overthrow the very basis of democracy as well as the principles for the formation of the country? That is sedition, not protected speech.
Germany is a democratic country that has banned the Nazi Party. Germans saw the horrific effects of the racist Nazi philosophy. Germany itself was nearly destroyed, and Nazis killed over 6 million civilians in one of the biggest war crimes (genocide) in human history, not to mention the death of soldiers in war. After World War 2, the Nazi Party was banned and Germany is still considered a viable, healthy democracy. Germans can still advocate right wing philosophies, but not those of the virulent racist Nazi Party, and Nazi symbols are banned. The US can ban the Nazi Party for the same reason, and similarly can ban KKK groups and KKK & Confederate symbols. This would protect our democracy, not harm it. I think we should consider doing so.
