The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

I was hoping for exhilarating fall colors along the trail but I was a bit early it seems. So I’ll just share what I did get. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves for the most part.
Following the first night’s camp at about the five-mile marker, I pedaled onward (and upward, always upward), toward my turn-around camp at about the 12.5 mile point. Photos along the way:
This (first) sighting of a Flicker was a memorable experience. Literally dozens of them exploded out of the pine trees along the trail just ahead of me as I approached on my bicycle. They disappeared back into the pines just as fast. Thankfully this was not the only chance for a Flicker photo; I did better once I finally got to my next camp.
Back to actual nature now,
The photo ops also finally started coming my way.
Although the beavage was apparently fairly recent I did not see any sign that beavers were currently active in the area. Obviously they’re still around somewhere though, and that is a good sign.
Heard, but not seen: Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl (identified by calls).
Seen but not photographed (dang it!): Great Blue Heron, Common Merganser (suspected; this bird was fast and gone!), California Grey Fox.
